About this tour

Why travelers from Vienna choose this

Travelers from Vienna benefit from direct flight options to the Dominican Republic, with airlines such as Austrian Airlines and Eurowings offering regular connections to Punta Cana and Santo Domingo. Flight durations average approximately 10 to 11 hours nonstop, providing a relatively efficient transatlantic link despite the distance. While flight frequency varies seasonally, scheduled services increase during peak winter months to accommodate demand.

The Dominican Republic serves as a practical winter escape for Viennese travelers seeking a significant temperature contrast. During Vienna’s coldest months, when average temperatures hover around 1°C, the Dominican Republic maintains consistently warm conditions averaging 28°C. This climatic difference makes it a reliable destination for those looking to avoid prolonged cold and overcast weather without requiring extreme travel adjustments.

Practical advantages further support the choice: the euro converts favorably to the Dominican peso at a rate of approximately 1 EUR ≈ 65 DOP, enhancing purchasing power for accommodations, dining, and local activities. Austrian citizens do not require a visa for tourist stays; instead, a tourist card costing $10 is sufficient, typically obtainable upon arrival or online. Additionally, many resorts and tour operators provide German-speaking staff or support, easing communication and improving service accessibility for Austrian visitors.

Are there direct flights from Vienna International Airport (VIE) to Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ)?
As of 2024, there are no direct flights from Vienna International Airport (VIE) to Punta Cana (PUJ). Travelers typically connect via major European hubs such as Frankfurt (FRA), Madrid (MAD), or Paris (CDG) with airlines like Austrian Airlines, Lufthansa, or Iberia. Total journey time usually ranges from 12 to 16 hours depending on layover duration. Austrian Airlines occasionally offers seasonal charter flights via partners, but these are not regularly scheduled. Always check current schedules via VIE’s official flight search or airline websites for updates.
Can I use euros (EUR) directly in the Dominican Republic, or do I need to exchange to Dominican pesos (DOP)?
While some tourist areas in Punta Cana, Santo Domingo, and Puerto Plata may accept euros (EUR) in hotels or high-end resorts, the official currency is the Dominican peso (DOP), and most local transactions—including taxis, markets, and small restaurants—require DOP. Exchanging EUR to DOP upon arrival at airports like Las Américas (SDQ) or Punta Cana (PUJ) is recommended for better rates than in Vienna. Avoid exchanging at hotels due to poor rates. Use ATMs in cities for withdrawals in DOP; note that foreign transaction fees may apply from Austrian banks.
Do Austrian citizens need a visa to enter the Dominican Republic for tourism?
No, Austrian citizens do not require a visa for tourist stays in the Dominican Republic of up to 90 days. Entry requires a valid passport (with at least six months validity beyond entry date), a return or onward ticket, and proof of accommodation or sufficient funds. Upon arrival, travelers must complete an electronic ticket (e-Ticket) form online before departure, which replaces the old paper customs and immigration forms. This e-Ticket is mandatory for all passengers, including those from Austria, and must be presented digitally at immigration.
Are there English-speaking tour guides available in the Dominican Republic for Austrian travelers who don’t speak Spanish?
Yes, English-speaking guides are widely available in major tourist zones such as Punta Cana, Bavaro, Santo Domingo’s Colonial Zone, and Samaná. Many tour operators catering to international visitors—including those from German-speaking Europe—offer guides fluent in English, and some even provide German-speaking guides upon request, particularly through Austrian tour operators like FTI or TUI Austria. However, outside resorts and cities, English proficiency decreases significantly. It’s advisable to book guided tours in advance through reputable platforms or your hotel to ensure language compatibility.
What is the typical exchange rate for euros (EUR) to Dominican pesos (DOP) when exchanging in Vienna versus in the Dominican Republic?
Exchange rates for EUR to DOP are generally more favorable in the Dominican Republic than in Vienna. Austrian banks and exchange offices in Vienna often apply higher fees and less competitive rates—typically offering around 55–58 DOP per EUR. In contrast, official exchange bureaus (casas de cambio) at Dominican airports or banks in cities like Santo Domingo or Punta Cana usually offer rates closer to 60–62 DOP per EUR. Avoid street vendors for exchange due to risk of counterfeit notes. Using ATMs in the DR with a debit card from an Austrian bank (e.g., Erste Bank or Raiffeisen) often yields the best rates, though check for international fees.
