Driving in the Dominican Republic

Traffic drives on the right

As in the United States and most of Europe. Steering wheel on the left, overtaking on the left.

Navigation apps work

Google Maps and Waze cover the whole country. Download the offline map before driving through the mountains, where signal drops.

Main highways have tolls

Keep small cash in Dominican pesos for the toll booths, or ask us whether the car has an electronic toll tag.

Fuel stations are full service

An attendant fills the tank. Most stations take cards; in small towns, carry cash just in case.

Expect motorbikes everywhere

Motorbikes overtake on both sides and stop without warning. Keep distance, use the horn lightly and check mirrors often.

Pick the car for the road

A compact car is enough for the coastal highways. For Constanza, Jarabacoa or rural roads, an SUV or a 4x4 is more comfortable.

Frequently asked questions

How do I rent a car with My Dominican Trip?

Fill in the request form on this page: the model or type of car, the pickup and return city, the dates and how you arrive in the country. Our team checks availability and sends you the options with the price by WhatsApp, phone or email. You confirm only when you agree with the quote.

Where can you deliver the car?

At any of the country's international airports (Punta Cana, Las Américas, Cibao, Puerto Plata, La Romana, El Catey and others), at the cruise and ferry terminals, at the main marinas, at your hotel or at an address in any city. Choose the place in the form and we confirm it with the quote.

Can I return the car in a different city?

Yes. The form asks for a pickup city and a return city separately, so you can, for example, pick the car up in Punta Cana and leave it in Santo Domingo. A one-way rental can change the price; the quote we send you shows it before you confirm anything.

Does sending the request cost anything?

No. The request is free and does not ask for a card. It only tells our team what you need so we can look for the car and send you a real price. If the quote does not suit you, you simply do not confirm it, and nothing is charged or held in your name.

Is the car in the photo the one I will get?

You book a class, as with any rental company: each class shows one model "or similar", for example a full-size luxury SUV, Chevrolet Tahoe or similar. With the quote we tell you the exact model we deliver; if you need one model in particular, write it in "preferred model" and untick "similar".

What does the rental include?

Every rental includes insurance and unlimited mileage, so you can drive the whole island without counting kilometres. Cancellation is free up to 48 hours before pickup. Delivery at an airport, a port or your hotel, extra drivers and child seats are quoted with the rest.

Can I add a driver, a baby seat or a second driver?

Yes. The form lets you add a car with driver, an additional driver, a baby seat, a booster and delivery to your hotel. Tick what you need and we include each one in the quote with its availability and price, so you see the full cost before confirming.

Which car suits my trip?

For two people on the coastal highways an economy car or a sedan is enough. Families of five fit a mid-size SUV; groups of seven or eight need a 7-seat SUV or a minivan, and larger groups a van. For mountain roads to Constanza or Jarabacoa choose an SUV or a 4x4.

Can I add tours or transfers to the same request?

Yes. In the "Anything else?" step you can ask for an airport or port transfer, a tour in the city where you will be, a place to stay or a private driver by the day. We answer everything in one message, so the whole trip is organised with the same team.
