About the experience

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know before booking this tour.

What is the route of the Saona Eco Adventure?
After hotel pickup, a bus takes you to the fishing village of Bayahibe. From there, speedboats run along the coast of Parque Nacional del Este to the natural pool, continue through the mangroves and reach Canto de la Playa on Isla Saona. Later you visit the village of Mano Juan and its turtle sanctuary, have lunch and return to Bayahibe on a catamaran.
What is the natural pool like?
The natural pool is a large sandbank with crystal-clear turquoise water, several square kilometers in size and no more than about one meter deep. While you take a refreshing swim, the captain hosts a chill-out with rum and cola and tropical music, and there is time to take photos with the starfish that live in this part of the Caribbean.
Why is Canto de la Playa special?
Canto de la Playa is the most remote and least populated beach on Isla Saona, and the description calls it the most beautiful of its virgin beaches, one that most visitors from the busier beaches cannot reach. You spend about 3 hours there sunbathing, taking photos and snorkeling, with drinks and snacks served during your time on the beach.
What wildlife and culture will I see on this tour?
In the mangroves, home to hundreds of seabirds that nest and raise their chicks, you may see marine life such as nurse sharks and rays while the guide explains each species. In the village of Mano Juan you walk through a traditional fishing community, visit the turtle sanctuary to learn about breeding and conservation, and see the local rural school.
Are food and drinks included?
Yes. A Caribbean buffet lunch is served on the island near Mano Juan, and there is an open bar with national drinks. Drinks and snacks are offered at the beach, and the catamaran ride back is a party with music, rum and drinks. Premium and international drinks are not included. The return catamaran has a quieter upper deck if you prefer to relax.
Should I bring my own snorkel gear and what else should I pack?
The boats carry some masks and snorkels, but they are shared, so the operator recommends bringing your own personal set. Also pack a swimsuit, towel, sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat and a waterproof bag for your phone. Bring cash for tips, souvenirs and premium drinks, since those are not included. Boats are equipped with life jackets and a sun roof.
Who should not take part in this excursion?
The operator does not recommend this excursion for women between one and five months pregnant and restricts their participation. People who are intoxicated or under the influence of drugs or strong medication cannot take part either. If you have a health question about the boat ride or the snorkeling, ask our team on WhatsApp before booking.
How long is the tour and how do booking and cancellation work?
It is a full-day tour of about 8 hours with hotel pickup and return in an air-conditioned bus; the exact pickup time depends on your hotel and is confirmed on WhatsApp. You book online with a $10 non-refundable deposit and pay the rest later, with free cancellation up to 48 hours before, except the deposit. A licensed MITUR operator with liability insurance runs it.
